Uttar Pradesh government is now considering making the MBBS course free for students willing to sign a bond to serve 10 years in government hospitals, due to shortage of doctors in the state's public health department. Students would have to fill up the bond, worth Rs 1 crore or Rs 1.5 crore, at the time of admissions. We are working our best to retain doctors in state run hospitals, said Arvind Narain Mishra, secretary , medical health and family welfare. This is one of the recommendations that has come to us from an expert study group that is finding ways to provide better health care in UP . We have made our deliberations. The final call will be taken soon.

If the plan goes through, 30% of MBBS seats would be reserved for such students.
