SC ruling on universities red flagged in Tandon Committee report

The Supreme Court has ordered the UGC to carry our physical inspection of the 41 deemed universities (3 out of the earlier list of 44 have moved out) within 3 months and point out the deficiencies observed. This has created a rather peculiar situation for UGC. The verdict comes in connection with the Tandon Committee's 2009 report wherein it had categorise 126 deemed universities in 3 groups, the Group C being of 44 universities which, to quote the report, were “those institutions deemed to be universities which, neither on past performance nor on their promise for the future, have the attributes, in our considered opinion, to retain their status as universitiesâ€.
