College Admissions & Entrance Exams Updates
NLSIU Bangalore to Conduct NLAT, Ditches CLAT
Published on : 04-Sep-2020 Powered by www.Opasis.comThe National Law School of India University, Bangalore (NLSIU) has decided NOT to enroll students via CLAT-2020. Instead, it will be conducting its own Entrance Exam NLAT UG 2020 for admissions to its 5-year Integrated B.A. LL.B (Hons) program.
About NLSIU:
The National Law School of India University was established in 1986 in Bangalore. The University pioneered the 5-year integrated B.A., LL.B (Hons) program in India. The program is taught in three trimesters each academic year. In each trimester, a student completes 4 courses and completes an intense program of 60 courses before they graduate.
Intake:
1. General Category: 93
2. Scheduled Caste : 18 (i.e. 15%)
3. Scheduled Tribe : 9 (i.e. 7.5%)
Note –
a) Six (6) seats comprising 5% of the total seats shall be reserved horizontally for Persons with Disability.
b) Up to 25% of total seats in each vertical reservation category, subject to a maximum of Thirty (30) students, shall be admitted under the
horizontal institutional preference for Karnataka Students.
NLSUI is part of the Consortium of National Law Universities comprising of 22 National Law Universities. All the National Law Universities except NLU Delhi were admitting students to their 5-Year B.A. LL.B programs based on the CLAT exam. NLU Delhi conducts its own entrance exam AILET. This year, NLSIU has withdrawn from CLAT and will be conducting admissions based on NLAT.
Course Fee:
a) General Category and PWD Rs.2,62,000.00 p.a.
b) SC / ST Category Rs.2,58,875.00 p.a.
NLSIU is committed to ensuring that no one who secures admission to NLSIU shall discontinue studies on account of financial constraints. NLSIU will facilitate scholarships, educational loans, and bursaries to students to enable them to secure their admissions.
Reasons cited by NLSIU to conduct their own exam:
Owing to the repeated postponement of the CLAT 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation, NLSIU decided to opt-out of the CLAT system. NLSIU stated that it is uniquely disadvantaged as it follows a trimester system where every academic year is made up of three terms of 90 days duration. Moreover, each term must accommodate 60 hours of classroom instruction in each course and adequately provide for examination and evaluation processes. Hence, if NLSIU is unable to complete admissions before the end of September 2020 it will inevitably result in a ‘Zero Year’ with no admission. This will deprive law students of the opportunity to pursue their studies this year at India’s premier law university. Hence, NLSIU is compelled by the current circumstances to conduct a separate admissions process for the B.A., LL.B, and LL.M programs for the Academic Year 2020-21.
