JIPMER MBBS Results Postponed

The JIPMER on Monday postponed publication of the results of the MBBS entrance examination due to “technical reasons.”

Anxious students and parents crowded Jipmer premises through the day expecting the announcement of the results as they were scheduled to be published on Monday.

“Many students and their parents were kept on tenterhooks as rumours circulated that the results would be known at different stages in the day. First, the expectation was that it would be known by afternoon. Then, there was talk that it would be available by 6 p.m.,” said K.R. Mathew, an activist with the Puducherry Swaraj Organisation and also the parent of an aspirant.

The lack of official information only fuelled apprehensions that something was amiss, he added.

As the crowds got increasingly restive, Jipmer put up a notice signed by the Dean at about 7.30 p.m. stating that the results of the Jipmer MBBS entrance examination “is expected for notification around June 17.” However, no specific reason was assigned.

When contacted, Dr. S.C. Parija, Jipmer Director, told The Hindu that a decision was taken to postpone the results due to a “technical problem” with the compilation.

“We will have the results out as soon as possible,” he said.

At about 9.10 p.m., parents got an assurance from the Jipmer Dean that results would be announced by Tuesday evening after sorting out the technical issues.

The Jipmer entrance examination for admission to its MBBS course July 2016 session was held on June 5 at 270 test venues spread in 75 cities across the country.

The examination was held in two shifts (morning and afternoon). A total of 1,55,193 students had applied for this Entrance Examination. The overall attendance for centres across the country was about 70 per cent. In Puducherry, 90 per cent of the 3,098 students who registered appeared.

While 59,017 candidates of the 82,019 registrants for the morning session took the test, 49,537 of the 73,178 students who registered appeared for the second session.

The number of seats to be filled for MBBS course is 200 for the year 2016; 150 of them will be selected for the Jipmer campus at Puducherry and the 50 seats for Karaikal campus as per order of merit.

The counselling for seats was originally scheduled on June 20, 21 and 22 and it remains to be seen whether the time-table would be revised.
