IIT Reverts To Max 2 Attempts For JEE Adv 2025

Announcing a major reversal of its recent notification for 2025, IIT Kanpur  has reverted its decision of allowing 3 attempts for JEE-Advanced, thereby limiting the maximum number of allowed attempts back to 2 only.

Reason cited for change: As per the notification, this has been done after considering various competing requirements in the meeting of JAB held on November 15, 2024. This has resulted in restoring the earlier eligibility criteria followed since 2013. All other eligibility criteria remain same.

Impact: as has been the norm since 2013, a candidate can now attempt JEE (Advanced) a maximum of two times in two consecutive years.

Impact on year of qualifying Class 12 (or equivalent): Given this reversal, a candidate should have appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

There no change in other eligibility conditions for appearing in the entrance exam.

Through JEE-Advanced, IITs offer admission into undergraduate courses leading to a Bachelor’s, Integrated Master’s or Bachelor-Master Dual Degree in Engineering, Sciences or Architecture. Both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees are awarded to candidates enrolled in the dual degree programs upon successful completion of the course curriculum.

In some of the IITs, students enrolled into the 4-year Bachelor’s program have the option to pursue B.Tech. (Honors) and/or B.Tech. with Minors. Dual Degree students may also pursue a Minor.

Further, in some IITs B.Tech. students also have the option to pursue Interdisciplinary Dual Degree, with Bachelors in parent Department and Masters in some other Department. All the above options require fulfilment of certain academic performance related criteria.
