The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) is set to introduce a new and unique B.Tech in Design program starting in 2025. The program will be offered through the Department of Design, with an initial intake of 20 students for its first batch. This four-year course aims to cultivate empathetic and creative minds eager to explore socio-technical systems and design innovative interventions to address complex problems within these systems.

Admissions to the B.Tech in Design program will be based on the JEE Advanced ranking, a departure from IITD's existing Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) program, which accepts students through the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED). However, aspirants for the B.Tech in Design program must also qualify for the UCEED exam as an additional criterion.

The B.Tech in Design program offers a broader and more interdisciplinary curriculum compared to the B.Des. program, which has a more focused disciplinary structure open to students from diverse fields, including arts and commerce. The new program is designed to incorporate elements of technology, design thinking, research methodologies, communication skills, and teamwork. Students will gain insights into prevalent technologies while honing their ability to address socio-technical challenges through design.

IIT Delhi’s Department of Design launched the B.Des. program in 2022, which quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to design education. With the addition of the B.Tech in Design, IITD is poised to offer a more comprehensive education in design, blending the rigor of a traditional engineering degree with creative problem-solving skills
