Admission to undergraduate courses of Lucknow University could be through entrance test from this academic session.
If the proposal for the new system is accepted, then admissions in the 2016/17 session will not be based on marks of class XII.
The proposal will be taken up by the vice chancellor with the deans and heads of departments in a crucial meeting scheduled on Thursday. The proposal also includes decentralization by handing over the job of admissions to deans of respective faculties. As of now, the university follows a centralized procedure for UG admissions. Admission process was decentralised at LU till 1985/86.
According to VC SB Nimse, the entrance test and decentralization process will save both money and time as compared to the existing system. The decision to switch over to entrance test system was taken last year as well but was dropped due to stiff opposition by a section of teachers. The entrance exam was replaced with the class XII marks system in 2000 on the pattern of Delhi University following complaints of large scale anomalies in admissions for several successive years.
Every year, the university faces flak for late admissions. The entrance test and decentralisation process will help in completing admissions in a time bound manner. We will appoint an admission coordinator for a short period of time, said Nimse. He added, The application forms will be received and submitted online. The admission coordinator will collect all details and forward it to the respective deans. In PG, heads of departments will admit students, while the dean will only coordinate the process.
Admissions at LU, both UG and PG, continue till October, leaving little time for classes and self study. The inviting of applications begins in May and the first merit list is released in first or second week of July. Officially, the academic session begins on July 16.
