Latest estimates of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) indicate that nearly 3200 seats allotted in premier Engineering institutes are likely to go vacant. JoSAA is the nodal body set up by the Govt. to set business rules for admissions to IITs, NITs, IIIT and other government-funded technical institutes.
How did this happen?
- Nearly 3200 students have blocked seats but have not confirmed their admission. these students have paid a non-refundable deposit of Rs. 45,000 to JoSAAA as seat acceptance fee. As per the present rules set by JoSAA, there is no provision for withdrawal of seats.
- Therefore 3200 seats are to go vacant if these students don't join.
- The tragedy is that the students who weren't allotted seats but who would like to take up available & unused seats would not be allowed to do so.
While the Govt made Rs.14.4 crores in terms of the non-refundable deposits against these seats, the loss of 3200 seats to other students desiring to opt for these could have been avoided.
