The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 and was declared as Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC) in 1964. Over the years, the Institute has made consistent contributions to civil society and the development sector through its education, research, field action and extension. Today, the TISS has earned recognition as an institution of repute from different Ministries of the Government of India; various State Governments; international agencies such as the United Nations; and the non-government sector, both national and international.

Campus & course wise intake
(a) BA (Social Sciences): 60 seats in Guwahati off-campus, 30 in Tuljapur off-campus
(b) BA (H) Social Work with Specialisation in Rural Development: 30 seats in Tuljapur off-campus

What the programs offer
(a) BA Programme in Social Sciences (3 Years / 6 semesters ):  
- This three-year undergraduate liberal arts programme is one of its kinds in India with an all-rounded understanding of education and particularly social sciences education.
- The programme provides foundational understanding in five key Social Sciences subjects – Sociology, Economics, Political Science, History and Psychology during the first two years and then introduces the students to interdisciplinary subjects like Environment, Development and Gender in the third year.
- Students study Mathematics and take foundational courses in biological, physical and chemical sciences and languages, literature in addition to learning applied statistics and research methodology.

(b) B.A.(Hons.) in Social Work with specialisation in Rural Development (3 Years / 6 semesters)
The programme aims at creating committed and competent professionals. The programme attempts to build skills in facilitating change and transformation in rural areas at the level of individuals, groups and communities. It also endeavours to strengthen the capacities of the students to develop appropriate skills and talents to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate rural development programmes independently and in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Reservations : SC (15%), ST (7.5%), OBC(NC) (27%) and PWD (3%) i.e. 1% in each category of a) Low vision / blindness, b) Hearing Impairment, and c) Locomotor Disability / Cerebral Palsy) as per Government of India (Goi) rules. The reservation for Kashmiri Migrants (KM) is 1% and for Armed Forced is 5% subject to the Government of India (Goi) Directives.

(a) For BA Social Sciences
Tuition & other Fee: Rs. 32,000/- in the first year (includes refundable deposits)
Hostel & dining: Rs. 94,000/- in the first year (subject to revision with changing costs of rents, electricity charges, provisions & fuel)

(b) For BA (H) Social Work with specialization in Rural Development
Tuition & other Fee: Rs. 32,000/- in the first year (includes refundable deposits)
Hostel & dining: Rs. 93,500/- in the first year (subject to revision with changing costs of rents, electricity charges, provisions & fuel)
