About the institute : The Government of India established the All India Institute of Mental Health in 1954 in association with the then existing Mental Hospital of the Government of Karnataka. The All India Institute of Mental Health and the Mental Hospital of the Government of Karnataka were amalgamated into an autonomous institute and thus the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) came into existence in 1974.

NIMHANS was conferred ‘Deemed to be University’ status by UGC in 1994 and it became an autonomous and independent university.

NIMHANS was declared as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament vide Government of India Gazette Notification dated 14.9.2012.

The Institute has 28 departments with dedicated faculty and skilled professionals in basic, behavioural and neurosciences. Currently, there are 1221 students enrolled in different courses which includes 270 PhD scholars. Apart from providing quality care for the patients, human resource development in the areas of mental health and neurosciences has been a major focus of the Institute. NIMHANS has been rated among the top five medical institutes in the country in NIRF rankings for the fourth consecutive year (All India Rank 3 in 2023).

a) Nursing: 50 seats in Karnataka Domicile category, 35 seats in All India category

b) Medical Imaging Technology  : 7 seats in Karnataka Domicile category, 4 in All India category

c) Anaesthesia Technology : 7 seats in Karnataka Domicile category, 4 in All India category

d) Clinical Neurophysiology Technology : 4 seats in Karnataka Domicile category, 2 in All India category, 1 in Sponsored category

Domicile certificate requirement : To claim that candidates are residents/domiciles of Karnataka, he/she should produce a certificate from the Tehsildar to the effect that he/she or his/her father/mother has been a resident of that state for a period of 07 years or has owned or possessed land or property or house in that state.

Candidates submitting Domicile Certificate in any other language than English need to provide a certified Translation of the Certificate at the time of the admission.

Applicants are further classified on the basis of Reserved Categories (Other Backward Classes / Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribe) under the ‘Domicile Category’ for the purpose of admission.

Compulsory internship : Students need to undergo compulsory Internship of one year duration immediately on successful completion of course. Stipend of Rs.13,500/- per month is paid during the internship.

Fee structure

1. For Nursing

a) For General / Unreserved / OBC / EWS Category : Rs. 53,000/- per year.

b) For SC/ST Category : Rs. 38,000/- per year.

2. For other courses

Rs.25,050/- per annum
