Founded in 1990 as SBMJC, it has been a deemed to be university for the last 7 years. The university is based out of Bengaluru and offers multiple programmes at the UG, PG, research levels. Its Centres of Excellence are Centre for Research in Social Sciences and Education, Centre for Emerging Technologies, Centre for Disaster Mitigation, International Institute for Aerospace Engineering and Management, Centre for Nano and Material Sciences, Center for Post Graduate Studies,Chenraj Roychand Centre for Entrepreneurship.

The BA in Journalism & MassCommunication programme offers hands-on experience with digital media tools, broadcast journalism, public relations, advertising, and specialised electives like sports journalism or documentary filmmaking.  The curriculum covers Media Research, Event Management/ E-Commerce, Media, Gender and Human Rights, International Communication, etc. It also teaches storytelling through text, audio, video, and interactive formats.
