IIT Madras, a premier institute, has started an online flexible BS/BSc Degree program aimed at producing graduates who will be employable in a sector that presently has high demand - Programming and Data Science.
The program is delivered online. Students from any stream, any qualification, and any age may apply.
Students who have passed Grade 12 and those currently in Grade 12 may apply. See “Eligibility” tab for complete detail.
Admission is done in 3 cycles each year: Sept, January & May.
It is expected that the applicants have studied Mathematics and English in Class 10.
Program structure/progression: There are FOUR LEVELS in the Online Degree program and to get a BS Degree in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras, a learner has to successfully complete all four levels.
There is also the flexibility to exit at any level. Depending on the courses completed and credits earned, the learner can receive a
a) Foundation Certificate from IITM CODE (Centre for Outreach and Digital Education) or
b) Diploma(s) from IIT Madras or
c) BSc Degree in Programming and Data Science from IIT Madras or
d) BS Degree in Data Science and Applications from IIT Madras.
Credits in each level
Level 1: Foundation Level (8 courses) --> Exit option: Foundational Certificate
Duration: 1 to 3 years
Level 2: Diploma Level (6 Programming courses + 2 Projects per Diploma) --> Exit option: Diploma in Programming or Diploma in Data Science or Both
Duration: 1 to 3 years
Level 3: Degree Level (28 credits after completing both Diplomas (total 114 credits)) --> Exit with B.Sc in Programming & Data Science
Duration: 1 to 3 years
Level 4: B.S. Degree (28 credits after Degree level (total 142 credits)) << BS Level added in 2022
Duration: 1 to 3 years
- The expected learner engagement is 10 hours per week per course.
- For each course, every term will have (a) online weekly assignments (b) monthly in-person Quizzes and (c) in-person End-Term Exam. In addition, assessments may include programming exams, mini projects, vivas, take home assignments, etc.
For some exams, you need to travel to designated exam centre.
Modes of Entry
1. Regular Entry (Any candidate, irrespective of the stream, is eligible)
2. JEE-based Entry

Selection Process
Apply online (Regular entry) --> 1 month Qualifier Process (assignments & exam) --> Take the Qualifier Test --> If successful, get enrolled into Foundational level
Fee structure- Each term, pay only for the courses you register for in that specific term.
Foundation Only (32 credits): Rs.32,000
Foundation + One Diploma (59 credits): Rs.94,500
Foundation + Two Diplomas (86 credits): Rs.1,57,000
BSc Degree (114 credits): Rs.2,21,000 – Rs.2,27,000
BS Degree (142 credits): Rs.3,15,000 – Rs.3,51,000
