About Indian Maritime University (IMU) : IMU was established on Nov 14, 2008 as a teaching and affiliating university under the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, with Chennai as headquarters. There were 7 renowned legacy teaching-cum-research institutes under the Ministry of Shipping, and these were subsumed under the Indian Maritime University in November 2008. Currently, IMU has 6 campuses in India:
1. IMU Navi Mumbai Campus
(Erstwhile Training Ship Chanakya, Navi Mumbai)
2. IMU Mumbai Port Campus
(Erstwhile the Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research and the Marine Engineering Research Institute)
3. IMU Kolkata Campus
(Erstwhile Marine Engineering Research Institute and Indian Institute of Port Management)
4. IMU Visakhapatnam Campus
(Erstwhile The National Ship Design and Research Centre, Visakhapatnam)
5. IMU Chennai Campus
(Erstwhile National Maritime Academy, Chennai)
6. IMU Kochi Campus
Additionally, the University has 17 Affiliated Institutes.
Admissions in Institutes Regulated By DGS: As per DGS (Directorate General of Shipping) Training Circular 12 of 2020, dated 01.04.2020, all Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) regulated by DG Shipping are required to admit candidates on the basis of IMU-CET ranking and as amended from time to time. IMU-CET is mandatory for admission to DGS approved Programmes.
Hence Candidates seeking admission in Pre-Sea Courses Diploma in Nautical Science, B.Sc. (Nautical -Science) and B.E/B.Tech. (Marine Engineering) to any MTI (Govt. or Private- Affiliated to any University) are required to qualify in IMU-CET.
After securing IMU-CET ranks candidates need to approach affiliated/ non-affiliated institutes for taking admissions as per their admission mechanism.
Candidates desirous of taking admissions in IMU campuses only need to register in IMU’s counselling portal which will be opened after release of IMU-CET rank list.
Campuses & Courses: In addition to 6 IMU campuses, there are 17 affiliated institutes and 28 DGS approved non-affiliated institutes
In IMU campuses, courses offered are as below:
i) B.Tech in Marine Engg is offered at Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai Port.
ii) Naval Arch & Ocean Engg is offered at Vishakhapatnam.
iii) Naval Architecture & Ship Building is offered at Visakhapatnam.
iv) BSc (Nautical Science) is offered at Chennai, Kochi and Navi Mumbai.
v) BBA (Maritime Logistics) is offered at Visakhapatnam.
(vi) BBA (Logistics, Retailing & E-Commerce) is offered at Chennai and Kochi.
BSc (Ship Building & Repair) is offered at affiliated institute College of Ship Technology, Palakkad.
BBA Admission: Admissions to BBA Programme will be Conducted through counselling based on CUET marks / 12th marks.
Application last date for BBA is 30 Jun 2024.
Acceptance of CUET-UG: Candidates can seek admission, based on CUET-UG score, to UG Programmes at the time of spot counselling for the residual seats available after Third List.
For Admission to BBA programmes, candidates with CUET scores will be given Preference.
Acceptance of 2023 admission test: Candidates desirous of taking admission to IMU programmes through any other eligible scores or through IMUCET ranks of year 2023, need not register in IMU-CET 2024 portal. However, candidates are to note that IMUCET 2024 will have preference and hence candidates should opt for IMU-CET 2024, for having a better chance of securing seats.
Admission in institutes approved by DG Shipping but not affiliated to IMU: IMU has listed 28 such institutes in the prospectus and specified that for admission to DGS approved programmes (B.Tech(ME), B.Sc (NS) & DNS) in affiliated / non-affiliated institutes, IMU-CET rank is compulsory, hence the candidates desirous of taking admissions to these programmes need to register in IMU-CET registration portal to take IMU-CETand secure ranks.
After conduct of IMU-CET, IMU will issue Rank Certificate to qualified candidates in CET.
Counselling
IMU will conduct Online Counselling ONLY for admission to its Six Campuses.
Based on the Rank, Social Category of the Candidate and availability of seats, a seat will be allotted provisionally to the Candidate from the list of options provided by them.
Candidates who have been issued with IMU CET Rank Certificate will be provided a portal through which they can register their choices for Programmes / Campuses where they desire to take admission, in the order of their preference.
Candidates have to register on this portal by making online payment of Rs.10,000/- towards Counselling Fee. The Counselling Fee is non-refundable if a seat is allotted for any of their preferences; else Rs.9000 will get refunded.
The Candidate should choose multiple options in the order of their preference for (i) Programmes (Based on fulfillment of eligibility conditions) & (ii) IMU Campuses.
After allotment of seat the Candidate will be required to confirm the seat by paying the Programme Fee of Rs. 30,000/- (Non-refundable).
Candidates who confirm their allotted seat will be issued with the Provisional Seat confirmation letter which has to be produced along with original mark sheets, certificates, physical fitness certificate, etc. for verification at the time of admission, as per the dates mentioned in the letter.
Candidates who fail to confirm their allotted seat by the due date will be treated as drop out and will not be considered for subsequent Admission Lists for up-gradation or seat allotment due to drop outs.
There could be a possibility that the Candidate may not get his/her first preference in the initial allotment. But, they may get upgraded to higher preference in subsequent lists, if there are vacancies. For this, it is mandatory that the Candidate should have confirmed the seat allotted by paying the Programme Fee (Non-refundable) of Rs. 30,000.
Candidates who have paid the Programme Fee of Rs. 30,000 and have got upgraded in the subsequent Admission List will not have to pay the Programme Fee again.
It is advised that Candidates may choose as many options as possible based on fulfilment of eligibility criteria, in their order of preference, to increase their chances for allotment of a seat.
Candidates desirous of getting admissions in Affiliated Institutes of IMU / other DGS approved MTIs may directly approach the College / Institutes of their choice after obtaining rank certificate.
Reservations in IMU campuses
(i) 15% for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC-NCL, 10% for General-EWS, 5% for PwD (only for BBA)
(ii) Reservation of seats for Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands, Eight North Eastern States (including Sikkim) and Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh in IMU, Campuses : Maximum number of seats reserved in a given Academic Year for the U.G Programmes put together in all IMU Campuses shall as follows :
a) Andaman and Nicobar Islands - 7 seats
b) Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands - 10 seats
c) Eight North Eastern States (including Sikkim) - 40 seats
d) Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh - 10 seats
Note for Andaman & Nicobar candidates : For Candidates native to Andaman & Nicobar Islands or domiciled there for at least five years, a separate CET for UG programmes (only technical courses) will be conducted by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration on behalf of IMU.
Fee
For BTech and BSc (NS): Rs.2,75,000/- per annum.
For BBA: Rs.1,05,000/- per annum.
Fee in affiliated institutes are different from above.
Transfer to other Campus: A candidate who is allotted a seat in a particular Campus can be transferred to a different Campus for a semester or an academic year or for the full course duration, depending on the requirements of the University.
Passport recommended: It is strongly recommended that candidates seeking admission to the Marine Programmes have a Passport. Please note that the name in the Passport should be the same as given in the 10th Std. Certificate.
