Global institutes, including the University of Alabama in the US and Beijing Jiaotong and Lanzhou Jiaotong universities of China, have offered to collaborate with the Indian Railways to execute the government plan of establishing a rail university as a research centre on emerging technologies.
Although its operations started 162 years ago, the Indian Railways do not have a dedicated centre for fundamental research. The need for international bench marking on available and emerging rail technologies has become imperative. Therefore, the need to establish a dedicated university, explained an official.
Fundamental research is not conducted at the Lucknow-based Research, Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), as its principal responsibilities are in the areas of vendor evaluation and setting technical standards.
Initially, the proposed university will function from the Vadodara based Railway Staff College (renamed the National Academy of Indian Railways) while the Central Training Institutes of Railways at Pune, Nashik, Secundarabad, Jamalpur and Lucknow will function as satellite centres.
Education Consultants India Limited (EdCIL), a public sector undertaking of the HRD ministry, is currently evaluating the option of taking up the plan as a Greenfield project. As a part of plan of railways minister Suresh Prabhu for establishing the academic architecture on rail related studies, Indian Railways is also scheduled to firm up memorandums of understanding with Chennai, Kanpur and Roorkee IITs and other universities.
