Indian students in grades 11-12 who have a passion for science now have an opportunity to showcase their talents and compete on the global stage. The National Standard Examinations (NSEs), including NSEP (Physics), NSEC (Chemistry), NSEB (Biology), NSEA (Astronomy), serve as the gateway to representing India in prestigious International Olympiads in various science subjects.  Students in grades 9-10 can take the NSE Junior Science exam (NSEJS)

What are the NSEs?

The NSEs are nationwide exams organized by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). These exams form the first stage of the selection process for Indian students aiming to participate in the International Olympiads in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, and Junior Science. Each exam is tailored to a specific subject, testing students' depth of knowledge and problem-solving abilities in these disciplines.

These Olympiads are globally recognized competitions and serve as a platform for students to compete with the best young minds worldwide. Achieving a place in these Olympiads is not only prestigious but can also enhance a student’s academic profile, offering recognition that lasts a lifetime.

Where Does it Lead?

Participating in the NSEs is the first step toward competing in the International Olympiads. Once students pass the NSEs, they move on to the Indian National Olympiads (INOs), which further narrows down the pool of candidates. The top students from the INOs will attend the Orientation-Cum-Selection Camps (OCSCs) at Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE). Here, the final team representing India at the International Olympiads will be selected.

Exam Schedule and Details

The NSEs are held in November 2024 (click here for details)

All exams will be held at respective NSE centers across India, and the question papers will be available in English and Hindi (along with other languages depending on the subject and number of students opting for that language). The papers include a mix of multiple-choice questions, with negative marking for incorrect answers in some sections.

Who Can Apply?

The eligibility criteria for the NSEs vary slightly depending on the subject, but in general students born between 1st July 2005 and 30 June 2010 are eligible and should be in CLasses X, XI or XII.

How to Apply and Important Dates

Enrollment for the NSEs ends on September 14, 2024. Students can register either through their schools or online. The examination fee is Rs.300/- per student per subject, which can be paid at the respective NSE centers or online.

What’s Next?

Students who pass the NSEs and make it through to the second stage (INO) have the chance to attend the OCSC in their respective subjects, where the final teams for the International Olympiads will be selected. This process not only challenges students but also provides them with exposure to rigorous academic training and opportunities for personal growth.
